Quality assurance

Our footwear manufacturing experts contract out the crafting of our shoes in more than 100 factories worldwide. We specify the style, materials, construction method and quality standards for safety, fit and durability. And to ensure your comfort, we have worked with a leading podiatrist to build patented comfort features into many of our shoes. All materials that go into our shoes are inspected, and we put samples of finished shoes through "torture tests" to make sure they meet our standards, and yours.

In spite of all that we do to ensure quality, sometimes the demands of real life "torture tests" exceed all the stress testing we can manage to put on a shoe. When this happens, above all we want to make it right for you, our valued customer. If the quality of our shoe does not meet your expectation, simply return it to any Payless store, where you will receive a refund for the original purchase price. You may also mail your return to Payless.com, and we will refund the original purchase price and any shipping and handling charges.

Shoe sizes
We closely manage the manufacture of our shoes to offer you a truly great fit. All of our shoes are crafted with the highest standards of construction to ensure sizes are consistent from style to style.

Selection of sizes
We stock most of our shoes in full and half-sizes to get the fit as close as possible.

We offer an assortment of footwear in large end sizes including Women's sizes 12 and 13, Men's sizes 14 and 15 and extended youth sizes up to 6. Many of our styles are offered in both regular and wide widths.

Wide widths
Payless ShoeSource offers a large selection of wide-width shoes in our stores and online at Payless.com. By using our search function, you can choose to search for wide widths in any category. In addition, when you are on a page for a particular shoe, you see every color available in wide width.

Find the perfect Fit
To ensure that you purchase the correct shoe size, we recommend measuring your feet. Our printable foot measurement tool makes it easy to determine the proper shoe size for you or your child. To use our tool, click on the appropriate link below, print the pages that appear and follow the directions on the printout.

Measure Your Feet Without the Tool:
You’ll need: A piece of paper, a pencil, a ruler

  • Stand naturally with one foot on the piece of paper.
  • Mark the back of your heel and the tip of your big toe.
  • Measure the distance between the marks.
  • Use our conversion chart to determine your size.
  • Use the same method to measure the other foot. One foot may be larger than the other. Always buy shoes to fit the larger foot.

Our shoe widths are the same widths used by the footwear industry:

  • Women's regular width is the equivalent of a "B" width
  • Women's wide width is the equivalent of a "D" width
  • Men's regular width is the equivalent of a "D" width
  • Men's wide width is the equivalent of a "2E" width

Measure Your Calves:
You’ll need: A long string and a ruler or a fabric measuring tape.

  • Wrap the string or tape snugly but comfortably around the fullest part of your calf.
  • If you used a string, measure this length with a ruler or standard measuring tape.
  • Compare circumference to those provided in boot product descriptions.

General shoe fit tips:

  • Measure both feet. Some people have one foot slightly larger than the other. Choose the size that fits the larger of the two.
  • Measure your feet in the afternoon, when feet tend to be their largest.
  • The size of your feet can change with time, so measure your feet regularly
  • Consider the socks or tights you’ll wear most often with your shoes. For thicker socks or tights, you may want to order shoes a 1/2 size larger than you normally wear.
  • If you require a wide width and no wide width sizes are available, try ordering a ½ size larger in the regular width.
  • When your shoes arrive, give them a test walk indoors on a carpeted surface. Make sure your toes have room to wiggle a bit. If you’re not completely satisfied with the fit of your shoes, click here for information on how to easily return or exchange your selection.

Our daily shoe care tips will help you keep your new shoes looking their best. At this time, we do not offer shoe care items online, but you can purchase products such as Payless Rain & Stain Guard, Payless Instant Shine Sponge and Payless Athletic Shoe Cleaner in our stores.

Manmade Materials

  • Wipe dirt and dust off with a clean, dry cloth.
  • If soiled, clean upper with a soft sponge and water.
  • We recommend using Payless Instant Shine Sponge for a quick, dust-free shine.
  • Payless Athletic Shoe Cleaner instantly cleans vinyl, nylon mesh and rubber.

Leather Materials

  • Clean upper with a damp sponge.
  • Do not use a wet sponge as too much water may alter the shade of the leather.
  • Apply Rain & Stain Guard before you wear the shoe to protect the leather from water, stains and dirt.
  • Use our Instant Shine Sponge for a quick, dust-free shine.
  • Our Athletic Shoe Cleaner instantly cleans leather.
  • If necessary, apply our wax based shoe polish for an instant no-buff shine.

Suede

  • Use a brush to loosen and remove dirt from suede upper.
  • Do not polish as polishing will ruin the nap of the suede.
  • Apply our Rain & Stain Guard before you wear the shoe to protect the suede from water, stains and dirt.

Canvas and Mesh Materials

  • Clean upper material with a damp sponge.
  • We recommend testing in a small, inconspicuous area to ensure fabric is color fast.
  • Applying our Rain & Stain Guard before you wear the shoe provides an invisible coating that seals out water, stains and dirt from the canvas material.
  • Our Athletic Shoe Cleaner instantly cleans canvas and mesh.

Velvet

  • Clean velvet with a dry cloth only. Water will ruin the nap of the material. Rub gently to loosen dirt.

All Other Fabrics

  • Clean upper material with a dry cloth or damp sponge.
  • Test in small, inconspicuous area to ensure fabric is color fast.
  • If uncertain, clean upper material with only a dry cloth and rub gently to loosen dirt.

Apply our Rain & Stain Guard before you wear the shoe to provide an invisible coating that seals out water, stains and dirt from the fabric. Safe for all colors.
